Criminal Injury FAQs

Many of our clients have similar concerns and questions regarding Criminal Injury claims. We've used our years of experience to answer many of the common queries.

What are the time limits for making a claim?

Strictly speaking you have 2 years within which to make a claim. However, there are exceptions to this rule, for example historic sexual abuse cases when the victim was a child.

If you are unsure about whether you are still within the time limit to make a claim, contact us for a free and confidential conversation.

Can I arrange for additional help?

Following your assault, and depending upon the seriousness of your injuries, you will be contacted by your dedicated NewLaw Welfare Manager. They will make an early assessment of your most immediate needs, be it assistance with benefit applications, access to counselling or equipment to help cope with your injury.

Your Welfare Manager will address your specific needs and keep in touch with you throughout the claim process. In the early days, they can assist with the hospital discharge to your own home and ensure that you are accessing all services that you are entitled to through the NHS, social services and your local authority. They will also ensure you are receiving all the state benefits for which you are eligible.

How much is it going to cost?

If you are eligible to claim compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA), it can be funded under a Contingency Fee Agreement, meaning if it is unsuccessful there will be no charge.

However, if your case is successful, we will charge 25% of the sum you recover – all of which will be fully explained to you at the outset of the claim.

On cases that are of a significant value and/or complexity, we are happy to discuss alternative funding arrangements to ensure you get the compensation you deserve.
